The Dalles, OR
Planted: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Tannat, Petite Verdot, Chardonnay, Merlot, Malbec, Saperavi, and others.
Jim and Karen were attracted to The Dalles by the warm, sunny growing season. The south /southeast aspect and slopes ranging to 32 D, along with an elevation change of 400' and rocky soils with up to 50% cobbles creates a variety of micro-climates. It is ideal for testing the adaptability of the unprecedented number of clones & varietals being grown for their Apical Vines nursery program. This concept fits hand in glove to the diverse macro, meso and micro-climates of the Columbia Gorge.
Celilo Vineyards was planted on Underwood Mountain in 1972, most vines are 40 years old.
The deep-rooted vines bring a mineral characteristic to Celilo's wines along with a higher acidity. At an elevation 800 to 1100 feet, the vineyard is considered sub-alpine, sitting on a cusp of wetter maritime weather to the west and the desert to the east.
An annual rainfall of 50 inches percolates into vineyard's grainy "buckshot" sized volcanic loam. Soils from the extinct volcano cone of Underwood Mountain can be as deep as 45 feet and retain moisture well, allowing Celilo Vineyards to survive without irrigation.
Due to the soil the flavors that come through the grapes is "minerally" and intense.
Today Celilo Vineyards encompasses 74 acres of wine grapes, growing:
Gewurztraminer, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Gruner Veltliner, Lemberger, Muller-Thurgau.
Rob Crooke, Underwood, WA
Planted: Pinot Gris; Pinot Noir (Clone #13); Chardonnay (Dijon clone #76)
The majestic, south facing site slopes towards Mt. Hood, the volcanic soil from Mount Adams and the temperate breezes from the Columbia River Gorge make this a special place for growing wine grapes. The deep winter rains from the Cascade Mountain range fortify the volcanic soil with moisture for bud break and berry set while the hot dry summers allow for berries with rich and complex flavors from the deep volcanic soil.
Small vineyard in underwood mountain that specializes in white varietals such as Riesling, Gewürztraminer and Albariño.
After growing and harvesting our own grapes at Flume Family Vineyard on Underwood Mountain, they are then used to produce small batches of select varietals. These wines are locally grown, crafted, bottled, and sold, continuing Flume Family Wines' values of land stewardship and community care. For more information of to set up a tasting, visit www.flumevineyard.com.

Hi Valley Vineyard is located at 3410 Dry Hollow Lane, three miles South of The Dalles, Oregon. The 15 acre planting consists of 8 acres of Merlot and 7 acres of Syrah. The vineyard was planted in 1999, 2000, and 2001. Our consulting sales agent, Lonnie Wright, can be reached at 541-993-0062.
Planted in 2004 on a high, cobbly terrace overlooking the Columbia River, this terroir is expressed through an array of grape varieties including Cabernet franc, Primitivo, Barbera, Chenin blanc, Gamay noir, Dolcetto, and Sauvignon blanc. Farmed from the soil, up; certified organic. 8 acres presently in vines.
Thomas and Marlene Woodward | Husum, Washington
Our 15 acre, certified organic vineyard is set high on the eastern slopes of the White Salmon Valley at 1400’. Facing south towards Mt. Hood, the vineyard is bathed in just enough sun to bring out the spicy, concentrated flavors of classic cool weather varietals. The oldest planting of Gewürztraminer dates to 1984. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay were planted in 2007-2016. In the Columbia River Gorge, Analemma, Viento, and COR Cellars all produce wine made from our grapes. Fruit from Oak Ridge Vineyard is also featured in wine made by Brooks, Viola, Fausse Piste, Montebruno, Savage Grace & Dowsett Family wineries..

Planted: Pinot Noir, Gewürztraminer, Grüner Veltliner, Riesling
Our vineyard, located high above the beautiful Columbia River is at the far western end of the Columbia Gorge AVA. Our Gruner Veltliner, Pinot Noir, Riesling and Gewurztraminer varietals on approximately 18 south facing acres, located at 1250’ elevation, are dry farmed. The hot summer days and cool nights ripen the grapes while preserving the acidity which is characteristic of Underwood Mountain.
Named for the intense wild fire of 2003 that swept over our irrigated ground and incinerated nearly every plant on dry ground. The headline read “ Vineyard Saved” and the aerial sure looks like the hand of God rested over us on that day.
The Columbia River is a huge moderator for our vineyard. “The best grapes see the River” is the old maxim and every vine has an incredible river and mountain view on Scorched Earth. The nearly constant west winds from Columbia Reach and the sloping southern exposure nestled within a natural rain shadow give us safety from extremes of heat and cold. We can grow the warm varieties of Syrah, Zinfandel and Grenache because we have the earliest bud break and harvest with ripening numbers that add up to great wine. We are fortunate to live on this beautiful land and to have Lonnie Wright manage the Vineyards for us.
